I recently finished Among the Hidden, By Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book is about a boy named Luke who lives in the future, a future where no pets and only 2 children are allowed. Luke is a third child, who was never supposed to be born. The penalty for having a third child is 5 million dollars or death, and the Population Police get plenty of money for each third they find. Luke lives in constant fear of getting caught, and his family has to take more and more precautions, especially when the woods next to their house get cut down. But then Luke notices a face in a window, a girls face, in a house where 2 boys already lived, and his life is changed forever.

I recently read the book Loch, which is about a boy (Loch) and his sister (Zaidee) whose Dad works for a man named Cavenger. Cavenger goes around and trys to catch mythical creatures. Right now, they are at a lake where locals claim to have seen what they think is an evolved form of Plesiosaurus. Their first experience with the beasts is not a nice one, one that ends up killing the cameraman. Everybody is afraid of the monsters now. Then Loch and Zaidee come across a trapped baby of one of the beasts, and realize just how intelligent these creatures are, and are determined to save them from the death Cavenger intends to give them.

I recently read the book Things Hoped For, which is the sequel to the book Things Not Seen. It is about a girl named Gwen whose Grandpa disapears, leaving a phone message saying not to worry, he’s alright, and not to let anyone know he’s gone. He couldn’t have picked a worse time. Gwen needs to focus on practicing her violin for her college auditions, and her Great-uncle(Hank) keeps coming to the door, demanding to speak with her Grandpa. Will her friend, Robert, and herself be able to live without an adult authority? Is Gwen’s Grandpa alright? Read the book!

I recently finished Stand Tall, which is a book about a boy named Tree. Tree is huge; at 12 years of age, he’s 6 feet, 3 1/2 inches and still growing. Hence the nickname ‘Tree’. You would think someone that tall would be good at sports, but the only reason he’s on the team is because of the memories the coach has of when his 2 older brothers carried their teams to victory. Tree’s parents recently divorced, and the whole family is still dealing with the pain of it. Also Tree’s Grandpa was a soldier, one who lost his leg in the buisness. Follow Tree and his family through loss and destruction, and find just how destruction is partnered with joy and happiness.

I recently read a book called Baby, by Patricia MacLachlan. It is about a family still dealing with the loss of their newborn, who recently passed away when they find a baby on their doorstep. The baby comes with a note that says her name is Sophie, and her mother will come back for her one day. They find how hard it is to love and care for Sophie, especially with the knowledge that her mother will take her away. With that in mind, they try to give her something that she can take with her when she leaves. This is a short book, but it has a great plot

I recently Read and finished a book called Coraline. Coraline was a young girl (10) who moved into a house, who she rented with two old ladies who claim they were beautiful actors when they were younger, and a crazy man upstaires who says he has a mouse tribe learning circus tricks. All in a day, Coraline’s so-called boring life turned strange when she asked her mom what was behind the strange door. When her mother proved it was only a brick wall, Coraline could not resist taking the key when her mother was out and opening the door to find her staring at her own living room and her parents behind the door. But, something was different. Instead of eyes there were black buttons. Even though her other mother showed love and care and tried to convince Coraline to stay with them, she loved her parents too much and went back. When she found her parents missing, she knew the other mother had put her grip on them. So she made a bet that if she couldn’t find her parents and the other spirits trapped here she would stay with them. Is her confidence enough to save her parents and get back to her real house? Read the book to find out.
